Halifax County, rich in forests and timber resources, is the home of two important educational initiatives involving wood technology, timber management, and forestry:

  • The Southern Virginia Higher Education Center (SVHEC) offers a four-year Bachelor's Degree in Forestry through Virginia Tech in collaboration with Danville Community College and Southside Virginia Community College. Students complete the first two years at SVHEC through the Community Colleges, then complete the remaining two years at Virginia Tech, graduating with a degree from a nationally renowned university.
  • SVHEC is developing a WoodLINKS program in Halifax County. WoodLINKS USA is a grassroots educational program offered in roughly 100 high schools, trade schools, community colleges, and universities nationwide. This regional initiative is designed to create a program to ensure the future sustainability of the forest products in Halifax County. The program will support the regional industry and guide students seeking education or employment in related fields. Danville Community College has recently created a new program called the Center for Advanced Manufacturing and Wood Products Technology located at the Regional Center for Applied Technology and Training (RCATT). Through this program, students can earn a certificate, diploma, or Associate of Applied Science degree in Advanced Manufacturing related to wood products.
