Halifax
County is made up of a traditional form of government
which is utilized by most Virginia Counties. Under
this form of government, an elected board of supervisors
is responsible generally for the legislative and administrative
affairs of the county. The voters also elect five
other officers who are responsible for the conduct
and administration of various aspects of the county’s
affairs. These five officers include Commissioner
of Revenue, Treasurer, Clerk of the Circuit Court,
Commonwealth’s Attorney and Sheriff and are considered
constitutional officers. Halifax County also employs
a County Administrator to assist the Board of Supervisors
in the daily administration of county affairs.
Within
Halifax County, we have four towns including the Town
of Halifax , South Boston , Scottsburg and Virgilina.
The Towns of Halifax and South Boston have a council-manager
form of government. Under this form of government
the town votes in a mayor, appoints a town council
and the council employs a manager to run the various
offices and jobs in the local government. The Towns
of Scottsburg and Virgilina have mayor-council forms
of government. Under this form of government the towns
elect a council and a mayor. The primary roles of
the mayor are addressing day-to-day town operations,
setting agendas for council meetings and conducting
the meetings, and representing the town at events
and ceremonies.
